The House with the umbrellas The gate The cart from XVII c.

   Dear guests,
Welcome to apartment “The barn” in “The house with the umbrellas”.
The walls of this stone premise of the old village estate are 80 cm in thickness, made of carved stone and mud at the beginning of the previous century.
A long time ago the local builders had been going each summer to make a living in Romania and Hungary and during the autumn and winter days had been gathering and building together the houses of the members of the communion, because to make a 10 m high stone wall hadn’t been one man’s business. The bearing beam of the barn is from oak, it’s long 12 m and it’s hand-carved. It’s practically impossible to hammer in a nail.
The roof’s construction had been joined together by wedges. Under the barn is the home dairy, where the master dairywoman Galia makes cheese from sheep’s and goats’ milk by an old local technology.

Here the breakfast includes cheese from sheep’s or goats’ milk from the home dairy, honey from our bee hives, airan or fresh sheep’s, goats’ or cows’ milk depending on the season. You can also order a home-baked twisted cheese pastry, a pumpkin pastry, mekitsi or fried with eggs slices of bread. You have at your disposal cutlery, plates, copper coffee-pots, coffee and sugar, as well as glasses for water, wine, brandy, tea and coffee cups, as well as a short menu with local home-cooked dishes and appetizers, which the Chef of the tavern-winery “The Gold Coin” may cook for you at the very moment.

“The Old closed hearth Furnace” studio The old closed hearth furnace A bathroom in The Old closed hearth Furnace

The premises of the “Old close-hearth furnace” studio had been a summer outhouse of “The house with the umbrellas”. There I have preserved the magnificent old hearth with the closed furnace from mud, where the one time owners had baked their bread and the lambs for St. George’s Day. I and my family have tried to make you feel from up-close the domestic coziness and the customs of the Bulgarian village man from the beginning of XX c. We hesitated for a long time whether we should put straw mattresses instead of the modern mattresses, rugs instead of blankets, but we decided that our guests wouldn’t be prepared for such an experiment.

Here your hostess Nedka will show you how to use the old stoves and where to find the traditional hand-knitted Bulgarian slippers, which are our present for you.
At 9.30 h she will serve you a breakfast, which includes cheese from sheep’s or goats’ milk from our home dairy, honey from our bee hives, airan or fresh sheep’s, goats’ or cows’ milk depending on the season. You can also order a home-baked twisted cheese pastry, a pumpkin pastry, mekitsi or fried with eggs slices of bread.

   We hope you’ll be pleased.
And we wish you all the best!                                                                            Victoria and Atanas Spasovi
