A view towards Kostenkovci village Welcome The location

In Bulgaria there are small and big settlements which history has rewarded with a valuable past. They are proud with heroes, voivodes and revolutionaries, for whom true stories and legends with historical significance are told. The location of the village Kostenkovci and its neighboring hamlets surely has put its impact on the life, the customs and the social disposition of its population. But if we are looking for the most important and significant thing about these villages in the past and the present days, this is the fact that here live pure blooded Bulgarians. Here the people speak on one of the purest dialects of the Bulgarian spoken language that has preserved through the centuries.
Kostenkovci village huddles up in a small valley situated between the foothills of Middle Stara Planina and 14 km. northeast from the town of Gabrovo. The slope on which the village is located is facing south towards the mountain and on the north from Minin Peak the boundless Danube plain is spreading. An indescribable view to the mountain is revealing from the windows of each house in Kostenkovci, a view which touches the competing over their height hills and chases the mountain ridge.

“… The sun has gone down silently and majestically. Its last illuminations, which were making the high ridges of mountain Stara Planina look golden, disappeared. Only a few small clouds, golden-red at their west ends, were still smiling at the sun from their airy height. The whole valley was in a shadow. The white screes to the west were sinking in the black evening twilight, which was covering further and further the rocks, the elm trees and the pear trees, whose outlines were becoming scarcely visible and unclear. Not a single bird’s singing, not a single chirping. Along with the darkness, the silence of the night reigned, wonderful and melancholic.”

Kostenkovci Houses in Kostenkovci The road to the lower hamlet

   Welcome to Kostenkovci village
To build a house is like writing a novel or painting an epic scene. In “The treasure – hunter’s house” and “The house with the umbrellas” the authentic lifestyle of our ancestors has been preserved as much as possible, supplemented with modern facilities. The furnishing is the result of many years of collectors’ searches and efforts among half destroyed houses, antiquarian and museum collections and private heritage.
In the tavern “The Gold Coin” and in “The treasure – hunter’s house” you will find old-time stoves and chests, hand-knitted tablecloths, hand-woven rugs, threshing-boards.
I hope my guests, Bulgarians, to feel the hidden energy of the old things, their kindness and warmth.

The song of the wheels Hamlet Chomacite (Primrose) The old school

…Kostenkovci gives you the opportunity to breathe in some fresh air, to delight in the beauty of the stars in August and the roses in May, to taste the juicy Balkan cherries in July, to try the tender roast lamb around St. George’s day and a juicy steak around Christmas. Feel the taste of the home made yoghurt and cheese, exhilarate from the scent of the mellow brandy and the red wine, which has collected in itself a bunch of selected sorts of grape under the warm sunlight. Take a walk among the ruins of the Guard’s Serf; drink some water from the old fountain of Tsaritsa Joanna, visit the Skalskite springs under the hamlet Chomacite.
We hope you’ll be pleased.
And we wish you all the best!                                                                       Victoria and Atanas Spasovi
